Book Review-The Music of Dolphins

My Rating: 5 Stars (out of  five)

Plot: Off the coast of Florida, Mila is rescued after being raised by Dolphins ever since she was four.
Now a teenager, she makes the headlines of Newspaper everywhere. Doctors and Researchers teach Mila all kinds of things about the human world, such as, language and music. She also learns about broken promises, expectations, locked doors and disappointments. When Mila knows what it means to be human,  she longs for her ocean home and her Dolphin family. Will she go back to the sea or will she stay?

My thoughts: This book is from the point of view of Mila, a girl who was raised by dolphins since the age of four. The reason why I said "Sixty-two chapters (roughly)" is, the first few pages and a couple other sections of the book aren't really marked as chapters. They are kinda like "Dolphin Chapters", and in them Mila tells what it feels like to be in the ocean with her Dolphin family. The first pages of the book is about Mila with her Dolphin cousins and then coast guards find her. Then there is a newspaper headline about her rescue. After that the marked chapters starts. When Mila starts her learning, the print is very big and there is only about 50 words on a page, but as she is progressing the print starts getting smaller till it's a normal size. And then at the end the print gets big again. (I'm not going to tell you why ;) Mila is very sweet and is always wanting to make the Doctors and her friends, Justin and  Shay, happy. Justin is the son of Doctor Beck, the main doctor who teaches Mila. At first it seems that Justin doesn't like Mila, but once he warms up to her, Mila tells him that he would be a good dolphin. And if he was a dolphin he would be her mate. Towards the end of the book Mila is missing her ocean home more the ever. She feels more like no ones wants to know Mila, but to stare at the "Dolphin-Girl."
Read the book and find out what happens at the end.

Would I recommend this book: Yes!

Sorry....

Hey everyone, I'm sorry it's been a long time!!!

I've been really busy. Here are just a few things I will be blogging about this weekend:

This is the second time Jackson and I have seen this Great Horned Owl in our pine trees and we got some pictures!!!

I love just standing out there and watching him! (at least I think it's a him :)

Although it's really creepy when he turns his head to stare at you! Especially when you are looking at him through binoculars! =0 

He was really big!

We are thinking about naming him Monticello (Monty for short) or Griffin.   What do you think?
           

There might be an owl nest around our house, because Great Horned Owls nest in abandoned Hawk and Crow's nest. And we have both birds.

Book Review-Inkheart Trilogy: Book One: InkHeart

Book Title: Inkheart

Author: Cornelia Funke                                  

Type of book: Adventure, Fiction

My Rating: 5 stars (out of five)

Plot: One rainy night twelve year old Meggie Folchart finds a stranger outside her bedroom window. Little did she know that her life would never be the same; her father, a bookbinder named Mortimer (Mo), can read characters and objects out of books in to the real world if he reads out-loud. When Meggie was three Mo was reading a book called Inkheart when two villains and a fire-eater were standing in their living room!! After chasing them off Mo realizes that his wife and Meggie's mother, Resa, has disappeared into the book. Nine years later, Dustfinger the fire-eater, returns to try to get Mo to read him back into his world. Mo tries to tell him that he can't. Desperate Dustfinger thinks the only chose is to go to Capricorn (one of the villains that came out of the book) for help. Soon Meggie, Mo, Dustfinger, and Meggie's great-aunt Elinor are caught up in a unforgettable adventure.

My thoughts: Well, first off Cornelia Funke is a very good author. She has written many children's fiction book. I wanted to learn more about this book when I saw the movie Inkheart.  So when I went to Barns & Noble to buy a book, my eyes got stuck on Inkheart! (not to mention it's brother's: Inkspell and Inkdeath =) In this book there is always something happening, good or bad. And what I like about it is that there is this book that Mo reads out of called Inkheart by this guy named Fenoglio. He was the one who created Dustfinger and Capricorn and everyone else in the book. So it's like a book in a book. I liked watching the movie first because I got to see the character and how they look and act. The only thing about the book is some characters use the D- word frequently and some kissing between Meggie and some boys.

Would I recommend this book: For 13+. Yes!

Book Review-Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events

Pages: They get thicker as it goes. The first one has 162 and the last one has 324.

Type of book: Fiction, Adventure

My rating: 5 stars (out of 5)

Plot: Down at Briny Beach, the Baudelaire children, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny, are visited by a friend, Mr. Poe. But he regrets telling them that their house was burned down and their parents did not survive. He then places them in the care of Count Olaf, a actor who lives in a dirty mansion. Soon the three orphans realize that he is a rude, uncaring, villain after the large fortune left behind by Mr. and Mrs. Baudelaire. Outsmarting him, the children are in the care of their Uncle Monty, for now...
(This was the plot for book 1)

My thoughts: They really keep you on the edge of your set! In every book Count Olaf is always popping up somewhere trying to get the Baudelaire fortune. And starting in book seven, there is a lot of mystery in it.  Now personally I don't care for mysteries, but I really liked this one. It can be confusing, but that's how Snicket wants it to be. So be prepared to read something that is totally random and messes with your brain!  There's one character, Esme Squalor, who likes to wear whats "in" and not whats "out", but there is one of her outfit in book 12 that's questionable and focuses on it a little to much. There are no curse words in it. These books are some-what dark. They talk about how, know matter where you go, you can't escape the evil in this world, I think there is a grain of truth to that, but I believe that Jesus Christ is the one who vanquishes all evil. In the end it's hard to say whether the good wins completely. Over all these books are mysterious, fun, and thrilling!

Would I recommend this series: For 13+. It also depends on maturity level.

I love old books!

I don't have a lot (yet), but I love the way they look and smell and feel! 

I did NOT take that picture!But isn't it intriguing? Don't you just want to stroke their binding, take a breath and see what story lays inside the pages!? Oh man do I ever!!

Just the other day I walked into our schoolroom, and saw an old book on a shelf.

There was no name on the binding, so I picked it up.
It was called:
"A Short Exposition of Dr. Martin Luther's Small Catechism"
The pages where yellowed and there was writing the margin. (This is my kind of old book!)

When ever I see an old book I like to see when it was published, and this one was in 1912!!  'Wow' I thought. It makes you wonder who first bought it and what it has been through.

Type of book: Classical

My rating: 5 stars (out of five)

Setting: In the Country, then in the City

Plot: Ben, Polly, Joel, David and Phronsie Pepper live in the little brown house with little money and a great many problems. And when a rich little boy comes to town the Peppers befriend him. He soon discovers the love and care overflowing in their home and he can't get enough of it. Inviting Polly Pepper to his home to study music is something Mrs. Pepper simply can not past up. But when Polly is homesick eventually the whole Pepper family is staying at the Kings. And What will they decide when Mr. King offers them to live there?

Why I love this book: This book is overflowing with love and warmth. I just love how the Peppers try to make good things come out of the bad. And the way they treat each other with such kindness is priceless!!!
Ben and Polly will do anything to make the little ones happy and Phronise always wants to help Polly with the chores. This book is defiantly a classic for all ages!

Would I recommend this book: YES!

Happy New Year everyone!!!!

Hope you all had a great year in 2011!

One of my Resolutions for the year is to try to catch up on math! (way behind) =(
And also to read the stack of books that I have! It's getting too big,
I can't keep up!
But at least I always a something to look forward to after I finish a book. Because usually I'm almost sad when I do!
